The 18-kilometre run between south Mumbai's seafront promenade and Juhu's beach is one of the city's most useful journeys to know well — here is how each option actually behaves.
The suburban train: fastest, if you time it right
The Western Line is the backbone of this trip. From Marine Drive, walk ten to fifteen minutes to Churchgate station and take a slow or fast train north toward Andheri; Juhu itself has no station, so you get off at Andheri or Vile Parle and cover the last three to four kilometres by auto-rickshaw. Fast services stop at fewer stations and take roughly 30 to 35 minutes, slow ones closer to 45. Second-class tickets cost a few tens of rupees; first class costs a little more and is noticeably less crowded.
Timing matters more than anything else. Board before 8am or between 11am and 4pm and you will likely find a seat; between 8 and 11am and after 5pm, Churchgate and Andheri platforms are dense with commuters and boarding with luggage is genuinely unpleasant. Avoid the 7 to 10pm northbound crush if you can. If you are staying near Marine Drive, the walk to Churchgate along Maharshi Karve Road is flat and shaded in the early morning.
Buses and the Metro: cheap, slower, and improving
BEST buses run the length of the city, and route 123 and its variants connect the Marine Drive area with Andheri via SV Road or the Western Express Highway depending on the service. The fare is under fifty rupees and the journey takes 60 to 90 minutes in normal traffic, longer in monsoon. Buses are crowded but frequent, and the double-decker services along the seafront are worth taking once for the view rather than for speed.
The Metro Line 3 (Aqua) has changed the calculation for anyone staying near the northern end of Marine Drive — the line runs from Bandra Colony toward Aarey and SEEPZ, but it does not reach Juhu directly, so you still finish by auto or a short bus hop from Marol or the airport stretch. For a hotel near Churchgate or Nariman Point, the train remains the sensible default; for a hotel in Bandra or Khar, a cab or bus straight up the highway is simpler than doubling back south to Churchgate.
Cabs and autos: where they win and where they disappoint
A metered taxi or an app cab from Marine Drive to Juhu takes 45 to 75 minutes depending on the hour, and the fare is meaningfully higher than the train but predictable if you book through an app. The Western Express Highway is the fastest spine when it is moving; SV Road and Linking Road are slower but drop you closer to Juhu's lanes. Ask to be set down near Juhu Tara Road or Juhu Beach's main access rather than on the highway itself, because the last stretch off the highway can add fifteen minutes.
Autos are not permitted south of Bandra in most of the island city, so you cannot take one from Marine Drive. You can, however, take the train to Andheri or Vile Parle and pick up an auto there for the final leg, which is often the quickest door-to-door combination. Late at night, when trains thin out, a cab becomes the reasonable choice; there is no need to plan around scarcity, just expect a longer ride.
Which I would book, and what to skip
If your hotel is on Marine Drive and your day is in Juhu, I would take a fast train from Churchgate to Andheri and an auto from there, leaving after 10am and returning before 5pm. It is the least stressful combination on a normal weekday and leaves you on Juhu beach in under an hour. If you are travelling with heavy bags or arriving on a Sunday, book an app cab instead and budget for the highway.
Skip the idea of a single direct bus for the whole journey unless you have time to spare; skip autos from Marine Drive, since they will not take you; and skip the 6 to 8pm return northbound, when the train is at its worst. For stays, hotels around Churchgate and Nariman Point put you closest to the seafront and the station, while Juhu itself suits a slower beach-focused stay with easy access to the airport.
Questions travellers ask
How long does Marine Drive to Juhu take?
Roughly 45 to 60 minutes by train plus auto, and 45 to 75 minutes by cab depending on traffic. Buses take 60 to 90 minutes. Allow extra time during the monsoon, when both road and rail journeys slow down.
Can I take an auto-rickshaw from Marine Drive to Juhu?
No. Autos are generally not permitted in the island city south of Bandra. Take the train to Andheri or Vile Parle and pick up an auto there, or book a cab for the whole distance.
When is the best time of year for this trip?
November to February is the most comfortable, with dry days and cooler evenings on both seafronts. June to September brings heavy rain; travel is still possible but allow more time and expect crowded trains.
