Marine Drive to Your Hotel: Transport Answers for First-Time Mumbai Visitors

Landing at Marine Drive and choosing where to sleep

Most first-timers arrive at the Marine Drive promenade from Churchgate station, a five-minute walk down Maharshi Karve Road past the Eros cinema corner. If your hotel is in Churchgate or Colaba, you can walk the whole seafront and skip taxis entirely; hotels around Churchgate and Nariman Point sit within 1–2 km of the promenade. Colaba's Causeway Road and Regal Cinema area is a further 3–4 km south, roughly 10–15 minutes by cab outside peak hours. November is the month to book this southern belt: humidity drops, the promenade fills at sunset, and tariffs sit below the December–January peak.

For a first trip, I would book Churchgate over Colaba. Churchgate gives you the Marine Drive walk on your doorstep, the Western Line for reaching Bandra and Andheri, and quieter evenings than Colaba's causeway. Colaba suits travellers who want the Gateway of India, the museums and Leopold-style cafes within walking distance, but you will lean on cabs for the seafront. Budget bands in this belt stretch from simple guesthouses to five-star sea-facing rooms at Nariman Point; expect to pay a clear premium for an unobstructed sea view, and check whether the quoted rate includes taxes before comparing options.

Taxi, app cab or the train from the airport

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport sits in Andheri East, about 20–24 km from Churchgate and 26–30 km from Colaba. Off-peak, that is 45–60 minutes by road; in morning or evening rush it can stretch past 90 minutes. App cabs and the prepaid taxi counter at both terminals are the simple options, and the prepaid desk fixes the fare before you leave. The Mumbai Metro and the suburban Western Line connect the airport area towards Churchgate, but with luggage the change at Andheri or Dadar is work — fine for a light backpack, not for a family with suitcases.

If you land after midnight, book a hotel in Andheri East or Bandra for the first night and move south the next morning. Bandra's Pali Hill and Linking Road hotels put you 45–60 minutes from Churchgate by road, or 20–25 minutes on the Western Line from Bandra station. Andheri East is the practical choice for early departures, with the domestic terminal minutes away. Say plainly which one I would book: two nights in Churchgate for the sights, and a final night in Andheri East before a dawn flight. It saves a stressful 4 a.m. drive.

Getting around once you are settled

Marine Drive itself is best on foot — the promenade runs about 3.5 km from Nariman Point to Girgaon Chowpatty, and walking it at sunset in November is the point of the trip. For longer hops, the Western Line from Churchgate reaches Mumbai Central in about 10 minutes, Dadar in roughly 20 and Bandra in around 30. Local trains are fast and frequent but packed in peak hours; avoid the 9–11 a.m. and 6–8 p.m. crush if you can. App cabs are easier for cross-town trips to Lower Parel or Worli, where the Sea Link saves considerable time over surface roads.

The obvious traps are simple to avoid. Do not accept a ride from a driver who approaches you inside the terminal; use the prepaid counter or an app. Skip the open-top bus tours if your priority is the seafront — you can walk it faster. Skip Colaba Causeway shopping in the heat of the afternoon and go after 5 p.m. when the stalls are fully open and the light is better. November is also the month to check the air quality index before planning long outdoor stretches, and to carry a light layer for breezy evenings on the promenade.

What it costs in time, and when to come

Build your day around distances rather than landmarks. Nariman Point to Girgaon Chowpatty is a 40-minute stroll. Churchgate to the Gateway of India is 3 km, around 15 minutes by cab off-peak. Churchgate to Bandra is 16 km, 40–55 minutes by road or half an hour on the train. Churchgate to Andheri East is 22 km, roughly an hour by road outside rush hour. Anything crossing the city north to south between 8 and 11 a.m. deserves a wide margin; the same applies between 5 and 8 p.m. Keep cash and a charged phone for app cabs.

November through February is the window: cooler evenings, the promenade at its best and no monsoon downpours. December and January bring the highest room rates and the busiest seafront, so late November or early February gives you most of the weather with less pressure on tariffs. Book sea-facing rooms early if the view matters. If it does not, a Churchgate hotel one street back cuts the rate and keeps the walk. That is the version I would choose for a three-night first visit.

Questions travellers ask

How long does it take from Mumbai airport to Marine Drive?

Roughly 45–60 minutes by road to Churchgate outside peak hours, and 60–90 minutes in rush hour. Add 10–15 minutes for Colaba. Prepaid taxis and app cabs are the simplest option with luggage.

Should I stay in Churchgate, Colaba or Bandra?

Churchgate for the Marine Drive walk and train access, Colaba for sights and cafes, Bandra for a quieter base with easy airport links. For a first visit, Churchgate is the most useful single base.

Is the local train useful for tourists?

Yes for short hops on the Western Line, such as Churchgate to Bandra in about 30 minutes. Avoid peak hours with luggage, and use app cabs for cross-town trips to Lower Parel or Worli.
